Que Sera, Sera

Whatever will be, will be.

When I was growing up, I always worried "What if this doesn't work out ?" or "What is going to happen next?" Whenever the outcome was not in my favor, I constantly thought "Why didn't this work out ?! I am a good person!" or "Why did it work out for her and not me?" It wasn't until my freshman year of college when I first learned of the quote "Que sera, sera", which is Spanish for "Whatever will be, will be". At first, I was a little confused by this quote because I thought that things should always work out for good people.

As I reflected on my past failures, I realized something that I did not notice when I was younger: the unwanted outcome happened in order to protect me from something. This "something" could have been a problem or negative circumstance that I would've dealt with if things did work out in my favor. I finally discovered that the things that didn't work out were not meant to be and would only prevent me from growing as a person. Just because something worked out for someone and not for you doesn't mean he or she is better than you. It worked out for that person because he/she needed it more than you did for their personal growth. Everyone has different opportunities and experiences in life.

Someone might get something that you wanted but not get something else that they've wanted. Most importantly, I learned that there are things that we can't control in life, and life doesn't always work out as planned. What we can control is how we react to the negative situations. We just have to take every failure as a learning experience, keep our heads up and move on. I also realized how lucky I am to have amazing opportunities and people in my life that make me happy and have helped me grow as a person.

Since my freshman year of college, I've been living by the quote "Que sera, sera". Whenever I start thinking about how I want something to work out in my favor, I realize that I cannot control the outcome and that if something whether it is a job, an acceptance, a friendship, or a relationship is meant to be, it will be. If it's not meant to be, it isn't the end of the world. Life always has a way of working out by refusing to give us something less than we deserve and then giving us something even better than what we wanted. If you're worrying about what the outcome of a situation will be or wondering why something didn't work out for you, remember "Que sera, sera".

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
