"Sense8" has long been seen as one of Netflix's boldest, bravest, and most diverse show, and for good reason: the show's entire main cast (not to mention secondary characters, of which there are many) is made up of individuals who have have stood out as icons for groups of people who rarely are able to see themselves onscreen. From LGBT+ representation to racial diversity, "Sense8" not shied away from telling stories that other Netflix shows--much less network television channels--refuse to air. And not only does "Sense8" tell these stories, but the show does so well, with true heart and sensitivity that is rarely seen. It was because of how well the show is run and presented that the news that the show was canceled was received so poorly by fans--and that this final episode even exists!
After Netflix announced that the show would not be returning for a third season (leaving fans on a total cliffhanger that involved a kidnapping, a shady government organization, and a wedding proposal), fans initiated a viral social media campaign that convinced Netflix and the cast to do one more episode, though the end product became less an episode than a whole movie, filmed to wrap up any and all loose ends.
Now, I know what you're thinking: how can a show that had two full seasons-worth of drama wrap up in just two hours? Somehow, it does: it's not quite as slow burning as the original episodes were due to the time constraint, but the last episode is still amazing, full of twists and turns and bittersweet goodbyes that keep the audience invested until the very end. I'm never a big fan of last episodes--I've always held the opinion that shows always try to hard to please everyone with the endings, then please no one as a result--but the final episode of "Sense8" gave me exactly what I needed: closure, and an opportunity to say goodbye to this wonderfully entertaining, emotional, and important program.
