A Sense of Purpose

What it feels like to begin classes that are important to you.

I think we are all familiar with the struggle of waking up at 7 AM and dragging yourself to an 8 AM that you care nothing about. Whether its College Algebra, Intro to Sociology, or Chem 1, we all know those classes are not the real deal. Maybe they prepare you for your major, or maybe they only exist to annoy us. But once you enroll in your first major class, you all of a sudden feel a sense of purpose.

It is that moment that it becomes easier to wake up in the morning because you are aware that you will be learning something useful. Something that will change the way you think, that you will hopefully remember once you venture out into the adult world. For me it was Child Guidance, walking into that class and realizing that I would learn skills that I would use in my field was exhilarating. Whether you have already begun these classes or you are just starting college, always keep your eyes on the prize. College is about preparing you for your future, of course there’s going to be some social aspects as well, but the classes really do matter.

So if those filler courses and pre-req’s are driving you crazy, hold on for dear life because eventually you will get to the classes that are meaningful to you. Do well in those pre-req’s so that you your professors and advisers look at you in a bright light. Once you reach the classes that prepare you for real life, you begin to understand that those “filler” classes were actually preparing you for something. Shoot for the stars and never forget to pay attention, at least in the classes that mean a lot to you.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
