Senior Year...Yikes!

Where has the time gone?

Senior Year...Yikes!
Caitlin Magowan

It is 8 p.m. on a Wednesday evening and I am sitting here wondering where the heck did the time go? Three years ago my parents dropped me off at the University of Rhode Island as a freshman and a Ram. Coming from a small town in the middle of nowhere, New Hampshire I wanted to get as far away as possible. Rhode Island was that "far away" state for me. I moved into Barlow with two girls I met on the Class of 2019 page and we were the perfect matches for each other. We were in a forced triple and let's just say, things were very crammed.

The first few days we were inseparable, the rush week came up. We all rushed our favorite sororities... two of us ended up joining Sigma Delta Tau and the other, Zeta Tau Alpha. We didn't see each other as much as we did in the first few weeks but were still as close as ever. At first, I didn't think Greek Life was for me, then I found some of my forever friends and got my big. My big was actually one of my good friends from home and I was SO surprised (in a good way). Fall semester I really missed home and decided I wanted to be closer... so I thought.

Fast forward 3 years later and I am now a senior and a Wildcat at the University of New Hampshire. If you asked me 4 years ago if I would ever be a wildcat, I would have laughed (only because that's where my parents wanted me to go, and of course as a 17-year-old, I couldn't agree with them). But I am a firm believer everything happens for a reason. Although I regretted my decision to transfer for quite some time, I realized that so many amazing milestones, new adventures & much more wouldn't have happened if I had stayed at URI. In my 2 years at UNH, I have met the most amazing people, found a major I am passionate about and found happiness with myself. I just want to thank my family for always supporting me and loving me.

Here's to an amazing #senioryear!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
