Senior Year Thoughts

Where did the time go?

Senior Year Thoughts
Kaylyn Strange

Summer is almost over. Like a flash of lighting, summer came upon us and now is leaving with the setting sun. Fall is approaching - with it changing colors and a chilly breeze.

For many people, this means classes will begin in less than a month - another school year and the same familiar routine.

For me, however, this year is special. This is my senior year of college.

As a freshman, senior year didn't even register in my mind. As a sophomore, it crossed my mind - a fleeting thought that disappeared before it could fully develop. As a junior, the thought came back, yet still seemed so far away. As a senior, I can hardly believe I am here.

I thought I'd never reach my senior year. Where did the time go?

Yet, here I am standing at the precipice of my future - looking out over the edge, seeing the void, and wondering what's out there. Various thoughts and feelings tumble through my head. Excitement. Nervousness. Anticipation. Perhaps also a touch of impatience.

Lately, people have been asking me the traditional questions one asks a senior. What are your plans after graduation? Are you going to graduate school? Are you getting married? What are you going to use your degree for? Do you have a job lined up yet?

Currently, I have more questions than answers.

Not having a set "plan" brings up feelings of anxiousness, restlessness, and apprehension. But before I have a nervous breakdown or think about crawling into a dark hole, I remember that I am not alone in facing the future. God is with me! He is beside me every step of the way.

Even though the future seems scary and impossible, I know I can trust God. He will continue to guide my steps and lead me according to His perfect will.

There are two Bible verses that I find especially comforting in this season of life.

The verse first is Jeremiah 29:11 - "'For I know that plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"

The second verse is Luke 1:37 - "For nothing is impossible with God."

The future is less daunting knowing that God is on my side. He is capable of planning the future because He can see the bigger picture.

All I need to do is simply continue taking active steps in faith and working diligently on the tasks He sets before me.

This coming year, I will be mindful of the future and I will do my best to live in the present. Ultimately, though, I will trust God and His plans for my life - all the while truly appreciating and enjoying each day, each moment as it comes my way.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
