How It Feels To Be A Senior In College

Challenges and things to look forward to

How It Feels To Be A Senior In College

We've just finished first week of school and yet so much has happened. Week one has been long and exhausting, but classes have been good thus far. As I am only a few months away from graduation, I am now taking my hardest classes. This semester will have plenty of challenges, and there will be moments where I won't be able to handle everything. This is especially true because this semester I have three evening classes that last till around 9:30pm. It's not the first time I have had evening classes, but having them two days in a row is probably going to be difficult.

One of my other difficult classes this semester will probably be my senior history capstone class because of how hard the research will actually be. For my capstone paper, I decided that I will conduct my research on the 1920's, specifically the prohibition era. I have previously done research in that area but I am still debating on where to go with that topic. One of the biggest challenges for this class is not only the professor but my peers. I want to make sure that the level of work I produce is on par with the work that my friends are producing too. The other concern that I have is if I will be able to manage my time well enough to complete the work that I need to do.

The other classes that push me hard are my Education classes. Last year the single subjects had a major issue with fieldwork placement. This year, we have the same exact issue. I love my program a lot but why do I have to be penalized for the lack of work that professors make when it comes to the fieldwork classes? Not having field work at the current moment, or for who knows how long, is both a good and bad thing. It's a good thing because it allows me to have open mornings and early afternoons to do work, but it's a bad thing because it puts me at a disadvantage next semester when I plan to start student teaching.

My last class is probably going to be one of my favorite classes this semester. The class is all about the civil war and it will be very interesting to see how the class will connect issues from the 19th century to things going on now. This for me will hopefully not only be interesting but also an "easy A" class, considering the fact that I had the same professor for a class last year and passed her course with an A.

Overall I am excited to start this last year. I don't know what kinds of challenges I will have to face, or what memories will be made, but one this is certain; I plan on having fun. So far the start of my senior year isn't as bad as I originally thought it would be.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
