The Senior Sigh

We've earned these envelopes!

The Senior Sigh
Alex Michaelsen

I come home from school, put my backpack on the floor like I always do, then the large envelope on my desk catches my eye. I can finally breathe again.

That certain large envelope, the bright purple shade that matches the color of my first school of choice gets my heart racing. I finally got it! I flip it over and "#It'sOfficial" is on the front. My college acceptance letter.

We've all heard of the 'Senior Slide' as in when the graduating class begins to let grades drop and let effort in homework go down. No one talks about the 'Senior Sigh' much, though. That sigh of relief when the stress of college searching, submitting transcripts and ACT scores and hoping and praying that application essay was written well enough. All of that stress is finally lifted and we let out that sigh of relief. Watching fellow classmates and peers get their own acceptance letters and watching their smiles light up just a little more once that happens is a wonderful sight to see. Everyone around is beginning to get excited about the future and to see where life takes them. Myself definitely is excited for next year, for move in day, for my first apartment, my 'college family', and to see how I grow and mature in the years to come. With this acceptance letter, it only solidifies the fact that change is coming and I couldn't be happier.

Seniors, let out that sigh, you did it! You searched for days, weeks, maybe months for that school or schools, and you're in! Those hours poured into applications, those early Saturdays dedicated to standardized tests are actually worth it now. Our futures are coming on fast and we now don't even have to worry about that sense of mystery or fear of the future. Those acceptance packets are worth more than gold to stressed seniors, we FINALLY have them!

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
