Anxiety – one of the more excessively prudent things that can heavily hinder human beings. Anxiety, by definition, is a feeling of worry, nervousness or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. During senior year of high school, I assure you there is not one person who isn't filled with anxiety, with college applications due and acceptance or rejection letters coming in. In my own experience, many of the colleges I applied to are on the higher class of the societal ladder, many in CUNY, SUNY and private systems. To be more adamant with my experience, students partake in a huge amount of pressure when waiting for college acceptance letters.
How are you feeling while you wait for your letters?
Well, before receiving my first letter, I would look at my application process and see if the school had already viewed it. There was not a day that I did not check it. I would get uneasy and worry about getting rejected. Many of my friends had not even applied while I was waiting for my letters, so I was anxious on my own, stressing about getting rejected.
How did you feel after getting accepted?
The amount of relief I felt was unexplainable. However, it was not my dream school, so I continued to stress, afraid that I would not get accepted to my dream school. Although getting accepted is great, in the back of my mind I would think about the process of my application in my dream school, which has a rolling admission application. That basically means that I don't have a specific date to receive my letter. That is when I begin to worry, because I do not know how to cope with the time that I have to wait for my letter. I know that though most of the letters from colleges do not have a specific date, most of them have a time in which I’d get a response.
How are you coping with the wait?
There is really no way to cope with it, to calm the anxiety, I think about the letters that I have received, and I realize that I have no rejections, all acceptances. I just needs to keep hoping that I will get all acceptances and be confident. It all comes with time.
