I love writing letters to my friends. Always have.
Every summer in between school years, when my friends and I didn't see each other every day, I liked to sit on my back porch and write letters to my friends. As much as I'd like to say they were beautiful, they were probably average at best. It didn't matter, though, because I had fun decorating the envelope and notecard and writing about my day, and I know my friends loved receiving the mail because of the excited text messages they'd send me a few days later.
I know, we could text, so why write letters?
There isn't a practical reason, really. It's just fun. When was the last time you did anything just for fun?
Whenever I am stressed or overwhelmed and just need a break, I write a letter. It's my version of a coloring book. Most of the time, my letters are silly, full of funny anecdotes or poems or descriptions of what my day was like. I rarely touch on anything serious. And when I'm done writing, I decorate the note card and envelope with pretty lettering, slap a stamp on top, and send it off! I know from experience that checking your mailbox and seeing a handwritten note is one of the best feelings in the world.
So, the next time you are bored or stressed and need something to do, try writing a letter to your mom or a friend who goes to a different school! Here's how you start:
1. Grab some stationery
I am a stationery addict, so I have plenty of notecards and envelopes to choose from. However, if you do not have the time to run out and buy some cute notecards, make your own! Pinterest is your friend, here. Look up how to make your envelope from computer paper, or doodle something on the back of the card and make a postcard! It is completely up to you.
2. Lettering
Lettering is hard, very hard, if you try to make every letter perfect. So why try to make every letter perfect? I say to watch a few tutorials on youtube on how to copy a font that you like, but you really shouldn't invest too much time in lettering. Just make the envelope cute and your friend will love it!
3. Stamp, Send, Gone
Now that your letter is complete, kiss it goodbye and put it in the mailbox. In a few days' time, your friend will be calling to thank you for the sweet letter that made her day. Hopefully, she'll send one back so you have a surprise waiting in your mailbox, too.
