Self-care is absolutely one of the most important things that should be on the priority list of every single human being. It’s important to note that I’m not just talking about the physical aspect of self-care, I’m also talking about the mental and emotional aspect. As described on TheLawOfAttraction.com, self-care is all about replenishing your internal resources when they are running low before they drain away.
Unfortunately for some, self-care takes a backseat which then can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms to make up for it. Whether that be drugs, alcohol, or being toxic relationships with yourself and others to provide comfort. While this isn’t always the case, it’s important to recognize and acknowledge when your internal resources are running low before it’s too late.
If you physically feel poorly, sluggish, or not as confident as usual, paint your nails, cut your hair, go for a run. Practicing small steps of self-care can do wonders both outwards and inwards. If you’re going through a hard time, cry it out, even scream if you have too. Don’t hold in emotions and feelings that you as a human being need to express to get through whatever you’re going through. If you’re in a toxic friendship, a friendship that makes you feel bad about yourself, questions who you are as a person, or changes you, remove yourself from that situation. If you’re feeling negative about a situation you may be in, seek out ways to either change your mindset or ways to leave the situation.
For example, let’s say you're going through a difficult time at work, your motivation is at an all-time low and you’re questioning what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. One of two things can happen, you can leave your job and find work more meaningful to you, or you can seek help, whether that be from a friend, family member, co-worker, or even a motivational speaker. With motivation being one of the most popular Ted Talk topics of today, according to ExhibitEdge.com, there is no shortage of support out there.
All of these things and many more qualify as self-care and should be practiced as often as possible because, without it, we self-destruct. If this is something you have difficulty putting at the top of your priorities, spend one day a week focusing on what you can do to better yourself. I like to call this #SelfCareSundays, although I’m not the originator that coined this term. Prepare yourself for the week ahead, I promise doing this once a week will get you started off on the right foot.
