12 ways to treat yo'self

Self Love Sunday

Loving yourself is a process. It is a journey. It begins with making the decision that you are worth every ounce of happiness that you can achieve in this life. Most of all, loving yourself is something that you must continually keep doing. There is no magic moment in which you will be able to stop working towards self love. While difficult and time consuming, truly loving yourself ultimately gives you the potential to experience life in an entirely new way. You will be able to achieve more for yourself, provide more for those around you, and appreciate your successes more than ever before. It is the most grounding feeling to be at peace with your existence, to look in the mirror and genuinely like who you see.

After hearing about the phrase, "Self-Love Sunday," I recently started taking the time each week to treat myself and do things just for me. I encourage everyone to engage in this trend, as it has changed my life and helped me become a better person all around. Here's a list of 12 ways you can start!

1. Take a candle-lit bubble bath.

Add some old fashioned soap or a trendy new bath bomb to a warm bath and soak up!

2. Try making a DIY spa treatment.

From hair masks, to facials, to body scrubs, there are thousands of recipes available online that you can try.

3. Take yourself out for a nice meal.

Whether with some friends or solo, treat yourself to that filet mignon because you deserve it!

4. Go for a drive with no destination.

The best part of a road trip is getting there, but you don’t have to plan a vacation to enjoy cruising around with your radio turned up.

5. Meditate to a relaxing playlist.

Whether you know meditation techniques or not, compile a playlist of your favorite soothing songs, close your eyes, and take some deep breaths for as long as you see fit.

6. Spend the whole day lounging around.

While during the weekdays you may be busy with work, school, or errands, spend your Sunday in a warm robe and fuzzy socks without getting up from your couch.

7. Indulge in your favorite sweets.

Enjoy some chocolate, brownies, or whatever your guilty pleasure snack is!

8. Go on a shopping spree.

Find some space in your budget to buy a few things for yourself that you normally wouldn’t splurge on, whether it be clothes, tickets to a show, or a new coffee maker.

9. Cook yourself a healthy meal.

Eating right always makes you feel healthier and happier, so take the time today to prepare a well balanced meal for yourself.

10. Have a movie marathon.

Make some popcorn and watch a whole trilogy in one night.

11. Dress up and wear something cute for yourself.

Who said that you always have to dress for other people? Get all dolled up just for the fun of it!

12. Make a list of 10 things you love about yourself.

While people often focus on the qualities they want to change about themselves, taking the time to recognize the remarkable aspects of your identity which you offer the world is the best place to begin the beautiful process of self love.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
