Let's face it. We worry too much. About everything.
How our hair looks. The car we drive. How much money we make. We surround ourselves with ambitions of being the greatest and the best and we get caught up in the hurricane of the world around us. In this pursuit of perfection, we often forget to take care of the vessels in which we gallivant through our world in.
With that, I am here to advocate for self indulgence.
Take care of yourself. Do the things that make you happy and do the things that make you feel good. You need to take care of yourself. There is nothing wrong with that mani-pedi you spent a little money on for once in six months. Go ahead, sit down and read your book. Light a candle. Drink some tea. Eat some ice cream. You do you.
I think we all know that bad days can get the best of us, and that sometimes the good ones seem too few and far between, which is why I am here to remind you. You, who is overworked and overtired, overwhelmed and out of passion, need a break. Go to the movies. Hell, pop in a DVD and watch a movie on your couch.
I guess what I'm saying is that at the end of the day, even when the world seems way more important, you matter too. We all do. It seems like that's something we forget more often that we should. After all, at the end of the day, we are kind of stuck with ourselves, so we might as well embrace that, because it's definitely inevitable.
Days where we feel worn down and stressed out are inevitable too, so it's invaluable to remember the importance of self care. We hear things like "treat yo self" all the time, but it doesn't always resonate in a guilt-free way. We feel pressure to be perfect, and this extends even to taking care of ourselves. The idea of perfection is toxic because it forces us to turn the ways we take care of ourselves into a competition, a facade, a measuring contest of taking care of yourself.
It's become a trending hashtag, a popular Pinterest post, an Instagram shot of a bath bomb... there's nothing wrong with different kinds of self-care, but it's not about glamour.
Self-care isn't a trend -- it's a necessity. So go ahead, kick back and have some you time, because you deserve it more than you might think.
