7 Self-Improvements I want to Make When I Go to College

In This Article:

This fall I will be a freshman at the University of Delaware as a Political Science major. It will be my first time living alone and I am really excited for this experience. I finally will receive the responsibilities and freedoms I asked for during high school. As a rising college freshman, here are seven things I want to be better and improved throughout my college career.

1. My relationships.

I went through years of bad friendships and relationships. I'm tired of all the negative vibes I'm receiving. I hope as I venture off into college I'll meet new people who have the same goals as me, want to go out, or simply care to listen to what I have to say. If I happen to meet a boy or girl that seems to be partner material I hope that we can bond over food and netflix, rather than "other" activities.

2. My time management.

I've been taking summer classes for about three weeks now and I must say the biggest test of them all is my time management. I set my alarms about two hours before I should really wake up so I can have time for my body to wake up but sadly I still end up running late. Even though I'm running late all the time, I sort of developed a routine that could possibly help me during my fall and spring semester. I wake up, take care of my hygiene, get dressed, leave home, grab breakfast, and then I head to class. After class, I go to Trabant to get food and from there I go to the library to catch up on any assignments I have. Hopefully I can stick to this and not miss that many of my 8 AM's everyday.

3. My hair.

I woke up this morning with my hair feeling absolutely dry and crusty. I HATE MY HAIR! It's so frizzy and just blah. Hopefully once my black dye grows out, I'll be able to bleach it and dye it some crazy color like I use to it. For now I'll just stick to trying new hairstyles and praying it won't poof up by 12 O'Clock.

4. My mindset.

In high school, I wasn't very focused as I had many things going on at home and in school. In College, I hope that I'll be able to use this fresh start to my advantage. I want to focus more on myself and my academics for the next eight years (I'm counting law school). I want to see myself more successful and happy in life rather than gloomy and depressed every five seconds.

5. My style.

I want to most definitely improve my style. I won't have my grandmother nagging on me about my outfits of choice. I mean I'm not twelve anymore so I shouldn't feel ashamed to have my midriff out. I want to try new and different patterns, colors, and styles of clothing.

6. My health.

I'm getting better at drinking a gallon of water a day but I wouldn't say I'm completely healthy. I want to change my eating habits drastically. I shouldn't eat Chick-fil-A everyday but I do. I definitely want to start eating more green and taking vitamins to improve my health and well-being.

7. My money.

I'm already college broke and I barely started college. I've started saving tip money but I'm always dabbling into my jar for spare change. I want to be able to budget better and save better. I spend entirely too much money on Chick-fil-A. I'm honestly about to start packing lunch until my meal plan activates in August.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
