As a a full-time student who works multiple part-time jobs, I understand the need to take some time for myself throughout my day. When life becomes too much for me or my anxiety acts up, I tend to shut down. I deal with this the only way I know how: self care.
It wasn't until college that I had even heard the phrase "self care" for the first time. And, as I soon learned, self care is just what it sounds like: taking care of yourself. Upon discovering that I finally had a name for the thing I had sought after for so many years, I began to recognize the importance of self care in my life and the lives of those around me. Like many of my friends, I suffer from the dangerous affliction of being afraid to say "no" to people. In doing so, I often put myself in unnecessary and stressful situations, which can only be assuaged by self care.
One thing I have noticed, however, is that people, myself included, have a hard time accepting the fact that it is important to take care of yourself. For example, earlier today, as my friend was walking to class, I shouted, "Take care of yourself!" and received a disdainful reply. You know how they say when you're plane is crashing, you're supposed to put on your mask before helping another person put on theirs? I don't see why we can't use this concept in our own, everyday life. I witness so many of my peers struggle with stress and anxiety without taking a moment to consider the need to take care of themselves.
And so, I'm writing this article because I advocate for the radical notion of self care. You matter. I matter. And in order to survive this world, we need to understand this. Self care is important, and it looks different to everyone. Some people like to go for a run, while others like to stay indoors with their pets. I want to share some examples and ideas for self care that my friends and I like to do.
1. Reading
It's nice to actually read for fun and not because it is required for a class. If you are a reader, I recommend reading something fun and lighthearted, like any of your childhood favorites.("Granny Torrelli Makes Soup" was a favorite of mine)
2. Going for a walk
I love my alone time in my bedroom, but I also enjoy a change of scenery. Sometimes, I need to get of my usual routine and move around. The best to do this, I found, is to take afternoon strolls around my campus or in the surrounding neighborhoods.
3. Watching something on Netflix
I do this more often than I should, to be honest. However, watching a funny movie or TV show helps me take some time out of my day to entertain myself and get away form all the stress in my life.
4. Coloring
I've recently taken up the habit of buying adult coloring books. Why the distinction between "normal" coloring books and "adult" ones? I have no clue. Regardless, I find it both relaxing and fun.
5. Cleaning
Yes, really. Cleaning can really help some people relax. In fact, sometimes it is the only thing that will calm my anxiety. Maybe it'll help you.
6. Bathing
Whether you are a shower person, or a bath person, bathing is perfect to have a moment to yourself.
7. Light a candle or burn incense
When I can, I like to light candles or burn incense. There is nothing quite like the relaxing sensation of smelling your favorite scent. Plus, a burning candle or incense offers a cozy atmosphere.
8. Making your favorite food and/or drink
Making something and then enjoying the fruits of your labor is very rewarding (and in this case, delicious). Also, I generally recommend drinking more water, as I know I definitely need to remind myself of this too.
9. Watching videos on YouTube
If you are someone who watches makeup tutorials, gaming videos, comedy sketches, etc., YouTube can offer you something to take your mind off your troubles.
10. Finding solidarity with friends
Getting validation is so comforting. It's like that feeling you get when someone puts a blanket over your shoulders when you're cold. Sometimes, the best option is to talk about it. Tell your friends about what's going on in your life. Perhaps talk about how stressed out you are about school or your home life. Maybe they have similar struggles to yours. No matter what you talk about, if you have good friends, you're sure ot feel better afterward.
These are just a few things that help me get through moments of high stress and anxiety. Each person practices self care differently. Activities that work for me may not work for you, and that is okay. Go explore what makes you happy. Self care is a journey, and ultimately, only you get to decide how to do it. As life gets more complicated, don't be afraid to take a step back. You are important. Take care of yourself.
