As stress builds up, whether it’s a result of academics, work, relationships or personal struggles, self-care is often our last priority. Unfortunately, this catches up and harms our performance in all areas of life – not just where the original stress was.

Taking care of yourself is crucial to doing well, and it should not be sacrificed for the sake of being busy.

There are endless self-care methods. Here are just a few:

1. Journal

2. Get some sleep

Take a nap, or go to bed early. Your body needs rest. Don’t force overexertion, or you will shut down.

3. Work out

Get your body moving and clear your mind.

4. Go outside.

Look at the clouds. Go stargazing. Enjoy the fresh air.

5. Work on something creative.

Color, paint, draw, play an instrument, write. Remember: It doesn’t have to be good. Just use the time to express yourself and relieve some stress.

6. Listen to your favorite music.

7. Talk to a friend.

Talk about what you need to, whether it’s what you’re struggling with, or something completely different. You know your needs; don’t avoid them.

8. Meditate.

Take some time to step away and breathe. Use this time to pray and be mindful.

9. Encourage someone else.

Sometimes we have to just think about someone else to get out of our funk. Write a note, send a spontaneous text, call someone. Reach out to someone you know is also struggling; let them know they’re not alone – and it will also remind you that you’re not alone.

10. Turn off your phone.

Seriously. Turn. It. Off.

11. Take a hot shower or bath.

What is it about bathing that’s so therapeutic??

12. Write down at least 15 things you’re grateful for.

Put life back into perspective!

13. Try something new.

Challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone.

14. Pursue your passions.

Do what you love, man. Remind yourself where and who you are.

15. Do something by yourself.

Do you love walking around downtown? Going to the movies? Finding antique owl cookie jars? Whatever it is, go alone for once. Give yourself time to be in your own head, but also in the world.

16. Drink a glass of water.

Put the coffee down and hydrate.

17. Do your simplest task for the day.

If you’re struggling to get started for the day, do something small. Gain momentum.

18. Read a book.

And not a school book.

19. Dress up.

Don’t just sit around in your sweats and old t-shirts. Sometimes wearing something nice can give you the confidence boost you need, and help you feel a bit more productive and ready for the day.

20. Make a list of goals.

Short-term goals, long-term goals, next-hour goals. Figure out what you want to achieve and think about how you can achieve them – without stressing yourself out. Take it one step at a time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
