Self-Care Should Be The Number-One Mantra That Guides All Your Other Decisions

In This Article:

Self-care is often neglected by many of us and we tend to blame our chaotic schedules for it. No matter how busy we may be, we need to take out some time to take care of us. If you are not content with how you groom yourself or your overall appearance, chances are that you will feel lethargic. This means that you will start feeling disinterested in doing things that you used to enjoy doing and that could have a negative effect on your health and wellbeing.

First of all, hygiene is crucial towards saving yourself from getting affected by airborne diseases which can metastasize simply through physical contact. You have to strive to keep yourself clean at all times regardless of how lazy and exhausted you may be. Trust me, there are some days in which I feel awfully dozed and lazy to even remove makeup after coming home late from parties. However, it is dermatologically recommended that makeup be removed once you are home to prevent any sort of acne or other damaging skin issues.

Second, plan on taking a relaxing and bubbly hot water bath that you rarely get the time to partake in due to the daily hassles of life. It is truly a rejuvenating experience in which you can forget the stressors of life for a moment.

Third, you want to provide yourself with one day in which you can relax and stop worrying about what's yet to come! As Murphy's Law puts it, "anything that can go wrong will go wrong." Head to the spa to de-stress and get a facial or body massage. You never know what difference a single spa visit could make in your life. There's no stop sign preventing the upcoming future from occurring and there is absolutely no point in worrying about something that you have no control over.

Speaking from personal experience, I as well as my loved ones have spent quite some time contemplating what will happen and why it has to happen. In fact, I have learned that stressing over something that is yet to happen or may never even happen is debilitating mentally and physically. In other words, learn to live for yourself at times especially when you know that the presentation, report, data sheet, etc. could be worked on after a few days because the deadline is still a week away.

Keep in mind that self-care is nowhere close to being defined as only caring about yourself and remaining isolated in your world. It means providing yourself with therapeutic care by socializing with others as well as interacting with the people around you. Oftentimes, the solace and peace of mind that you are aiming to find within yourself is found in others. All you need to do is simply search for it in others as well. Mingling with others will elicit feelings of reduced stress and allow you to become more focused on your daily activities.

Life doesn't have to be all that serious all the time and you only get the opportunity to live once!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
