Self Care For Fresh Starts

New Semester, New Mindset

Self Care For Fresh Starts

The beginning of a new semester of school can get a little crazy. From new classes and schedules to jobs and extracurriculars, change and novelty can be both exciting and overwhelming. In these times of transition, it is important to refresh the mind in order to mentally and physically prepare the body for all that the new future may entail. Here are a few simple self-care ideas for fresh starts.

Take Time To Breathe

When we are on the go, we often forget the significance of slowing down to refocus and breathe. Take a few moments at the start of your day to meditate for a few minutes. Focus on your breathing and take a few long inhales and exhales. Remember that when things get tough, you always have the breath!

Do Frequent Brain Dumps

When to-do lists and responsibilities are brewing a storm in my head, I love to pull out a journal or a piece of paper and spill everything onto the page. Write down everything on your mind and any emotions you are feeling. This is a great way to build self-awareness, to get the chaos out of your headspace, and to view things from a different perspective.

Make Healthy Choices

It is so important to take care of your physical body. In a previous article, I wrote about how the body is like a temple. Make sure you are eating healthy, drinking water, sleeping adequately, and getting some exercise in. Not only will you feel better, but you will be functioning at your best and working at your full potential.

Set "Wind Down" Time

Sometimes, when schedules get busy, taking time to relax can seem insignificant and wasteful, but it is quite the opposite. Even if it is just a half an hour before bed, set aside time to wind down from the day and give your brain and body a break. Some of my favorite activities to do are journaling, watching a show, reading for leisure, and drawing.

Break Away For A Bit

After working in the same place for a while and following a mundane routine, it can be helpful to break away from that space and spend some time somewhere else. In seasons of change, giving your brain the space and time to process is really important. Go out with friends for a while, try a new restaurant, or find a peaceful hiking trail!

I hope some of these tips help! Always remember to take care of yourself and your mindset…

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
