15 Self-Care Ways To De-Stress During Finals Week

In This Article:

When the end of the semester rolls around, tensions are at their highest. Between final tests, research papers, and group projects, as well as figuring out plans for the summer, there's so much to do. In the midst of trying to accomplish everything, it's easy to forget about taking care of yourself. It's so important to do some self-care things, especially during finals. As long as you are physically and mentally well, it'll be much easier to end the semester on a high note. Here are 15 things you can do to take care of yourself during finals week.

1. Wear something that makes you feel good.

It doesn't have to be fashionable, cute, or even nice. If you feel comfortable in it, wear it.

2. Use a facemask.

They're relatively cheap, plus your skin will feel amazing after.

3. Polish your nails.

Then they'll look even prettier as they fly across your keyboard, typing up your final papers.

4. Take a nap.

If you're too tired to focus, you're too tired to do anything well. Take some time out of your day to rest, then wake up and get back to productivity.

5. Watch Netflix.

This is a great option when you're doing homework (if you can still focus on the homework), eating a meal, or doing most of the activities in this list.

6. Clean your room.

Having an organized and tidy space will make you feel better and will be less distracting.

7. FaceTime a friend.

Catch up on their life. Tell them about yours. Have some laughs. Be there for them.

8. Exercise.

Whether you walk a lap around campus or go to the gym, it's a good idea to move around and not stay anchored to your desk all week.

9. Read something that’s not for a class.

It gets so old reading things you don't like, so give your brain a break and read something that's more your style.

10. Write something that’s not for a class.

A poem, short story, journal entry, or whatever. Get your thoughts out of your brain and onto paper or a screen.

11. Create and listen to a playlist.

Like Netflix, this is another thing you can do in the background with other things.

12. Have a game night with your friends.

Finals week is busy for everyone but taking the time to get together with friends can be a great way to forget about everything for a while.

13. Eat your fruits and veggies.

Self-care extends to your diet too.

14. Take some deep breaths.

Count to a certain number or follow a YouTube video.

15. Get 8 hours of sleep.

Pulling an all-nighter won't do you any favors. Get enough sleep to feel good for tomorrow.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
