Self Care Tips I Wish I Knew Before College

Make taking care of yourself a priority

Self Care Tips I Wish I Knew Before College

1. Get a good skin care routine down

This one is absolutely key! You will be stressed more than you actually know in college, and your skin will definitely take it out on you. Before college try to find a good face wash, lotion, toner, or whatever skin products would work for you. Drinking some water and doing the occasional face mask isn't a bad idea either.

This is one of my favorite brands and it's like $2.50 for an individual one at target, or like $16 for a 2 oz bottle of the mud mask.

2. Find a "sanctuary" on campus

A "sanctuary" can be defined as any person, place, or activity that helps you to put stress to the side or helps you to momentarily forget about stress. Try to make use of your personal sanctuary as often as you possibly need. Even if you feel like there isn't enough time, even 15 minutes would be beneficial. Personally, my sanctuary is my best friend, and she helps me to forget stress even if I'm just doing homework around her. It is important to give yourself those mental breaks and refresh your mind every now and then. Not only will you be less stressed, but you will find yourself being able to think much more clearly.

3. Set a bed time and try as hard as possible to stick to it

This is probably the hardest tip to follow. Even I struggle with this one....like a lot! The usual recommended amount of sleep for any adult is anywhere from 7 to 9 hours a night. If you know that you have to be up at a certain time every day, just subtract back 7 or 9 hours to set your bed time for the night. Try to keep this bedtime as consistent as possible, because consistency is key for a healthy sleep. Your mind, skin, and body will thank you for it.

(Tip: If you're an IPhone user. go to the clock. There is a bedtime setting there that can help you get into a consistent sleep pattern. I'll post a picture of what you should see when you go there.)

4. Germs are everywhere, so it might be best to start taking a multivitamin asap

A multivitamin helps fill in those tiny gaps of vitamins and nutrients that you don't always get every day. Doing this helps you to be just a tiny bit healthier and lessens your chances of catching the plague (probably just a cold or flu) that goes around college campuses every year. This is probably the easiest precaution to take when it comes to physical illness because it takes not even 10 seconds out of your day....you just have to remember to take it every day.

5. Use the meditation station on Pandora

I promise, you'll thank me for this one later. This station is great for stretching, studying, sleep, meditation, or if you just need to chill out. This is probably my most used station on Pandora. Just give it a try

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
