Selena Quintanilla…what can I say about her? She was a very talented, beautiful singer who was known by everyone!

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was born on April 16, 1971, and passed away on Mar. 31, 1995, at age 23 (the year before I was born). She was born in Texas, raised by Marcella Ofelia Quintanilla and Abraham Quintanilla, Jr., and the sister of Suzette Quintanilla and A.B. Quintanilla III (who are still alive today).

At age 6, her father considered her a good singer. When he opened a Tex-Mex restaurant, he made her and her siblings come up with a small band and sing at the restaurant at nights. But the restaurant had to be shut down in 1980. They went bankrupt and moved to Corpus Christi. Quintanilla and her siblings made a band together, named it "Selena Y Los Dinos," and began promoting themselves. In the 1980s, she met her future husband Chris Perez, who also joined Selena Y Los Dinos as a guitarist at a company she was going to shoot a commercial for Coca-Cola.

In 1990, Quintanilla released her second album, "Ven Comingo." She was asked by Yolanda Saldivar to make a fan club. She said yes and they knew they would get more exposure. Saldivar soon became a trusted friend to the Quintanilla family. In 1992, Quintanilla won an award at the Billboard Music Awards for a song called "Buenos Amigos."

That famous track made her able to tour around the world…so she did. In 1993, she released "Selena: Live!" From the music in 1994, she started to design and manufacture a line of clothing and opened a boutique called "Selena Etc.," which she managed. In March 1994, she released her fourth album, "Amor Prohibido." She peaked the second tejano album and best selling in 1995 and was named one of Latin’s most successful touring acts.

In early 1994, though, the family appointed Saldivar as manager for the boutique. Seven months later, Saldivar signed the contract as manager. But in December of 1994, store sales started to decrease and Saldivar started to fire employees she "disliked."

Quintanilla's father heard other stories about Saldivar and went to Quintanilla to warn her, but Quintanilla didn't listen because she knew she could trust Saldivar. Quintanilla's father received calls from fans that sent money and didn't receive anything, so he looked into it. Bad news: Saldivar was embezzling in forged checks.

On the morning of Mar. 31, 1995, Quintanilla went to go to a hotel to meet Saldivar to demand papers and other financial stuff. But when Quintanilla started to leave, Saldivar pulled a gun and shot her. She went to the hospital but never made it.

Quintanilla's death made a huge impact in the world in that time. They stopped the TV shows and announced she has been murdered. On April 12, 1995, governor George W. Bush made her birthday, April 16, "Selena Day" in Texas.

When it comes to Bloomington-Normal, there are many outstanding factors that any Illinois State student can say are unique to our college town (and maybe others too). Proud or not, we Redbirds know all the ins and outs of Blono.

1. The wait for Buffalo Wild Wings is always going to be long on Thursday nights.

As hard as we try, it's nearly impossible to resist the 69-cent wings on a college student budget. Plus, they are always delicious!
