Taking criticism and turning it into inspiration.

In recent news, the media has been buzzing about Selena Gomez being photographed in a bikini for the first time since her kidney transplant.

While Selena looked happy and healthy, despite post-op complications, comments about her photos were far from positive. Negative comments about her weight took away from the intention of inspiration through these photographs.

Lupus, and its host of symptoms, makes it a potentially debilitating disease. Instead of focusing on how amazing Selena was doing because of the transplant, and focusing on how drastically her health had improved, people chose to frame her body in a negative light.

For one, Selena Gomez is stunning. I know I am not alone when I say her spirit and beauty absolutely shine through in every photo and interview. She is a knockout at any size or shape. Period.

Secondly, Selena is 25 and has been under public scrutiny since she was a child. She has had to deal with complex health conditions all while surviving under the shrewd, and often critical, public eye. She has thrived in true adversity and the last thing we should do is criticize her because she doesnā€™t adhere to the unrealistic expectations of beauty our society has placed on women.

Why not be proud of her accomplishments? Why not celebrate the fact that she made it through to the proverbial end of the tunnel?

We are in a current environment of women empowerment and supporting women defining themselves, rather than letting society define them and break them down. Negative remarks about anyoneā€™s body only represent a step backward in this fight to enact true change in society.

Selenaā€™s response to such demeaning criticisms only serves to strengthen her character and turn our attention to what should have been the conversation surrounding her photographs: a message on health and empowerment.

Selenaā€™s promotion of self-love and rewriting the script on societyā€™s expectations of women is the message that women of all ages should be seeing on their newsfeeds.

As people, we are ALL self-conscious and critical of our bodies. We ALL have aspects of ourselves that we wish we could change. We ALL get frustrated or disheartened with living in our own skin.

Without needing anyone to say anything to us, we scrutinize ourselves.

So, why impart that unnecessary scrutiny on someone else? Why knock someone down rather than build them up?

We often forget that our bodies are beautiful. They are capable of absolutely astounding feats. Day in and day out, our bodies get us through the day despite stress or lack of sleep.

We should all be proud of the crazy awesome things our bodies do and support anyone for showcasing their pride in living in their own skin.

Selena Gomez is a vibrant role model, and her message surrounding these photographs is one of inspiration, authenticity, and empowerment. It is a message we could all benefit from internalizing and promoting in our own lives.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!
