Why You Should Seize The Day In College

Taking risks in college is just as important as your academics.

Why You Should Seize The Day In College

I've heard some great phrases and sayings in my life that are made to encourage people to take risks. Things like "carpe diem" or "YOLO." Sure, we think about these phrases when it comes to turning up on a Tuesday night even though you have an 8 a.m. class the next day or when you don't put as much effort as you could into a homework assignment. What if we applied these aspects to other parts of our lives?

I am a firm believer in the idea that academics come first. I mean, that's the main reason we go to college, right? Having a "carpe diem" lifestyle could ultimately help you reach your full potential and more. I'll be the first one to tell you that I am a lover of sleep, especially naps. While I would love to have time to nap every day, I know that carrying a heavier course load with classes that challenge my thinking will benefit me at the end of the day. Without those challenging classes, we would never be forced out of our comfort zone and would still see the world in the same way.

While getting a degree is important, the relationships you build and develop are significant too. These people will become your life-long friends, your support system, and maybe even members of your wedding party. It can be scary branching out to meet people at first, but reality is we are all slightly nervous when it comes to putting ourselves out there. If it was not for joining a sorority, I would not have the amazing relationships that I have today. I have found my place on this campus and have found "my people" who I know will have my back through thick and thin.

Living a healthy lifestyle is obviously important, but it's college and we all know how difficult it can be to stay in that healthy mindset. Well, it's called balance and it's definitely something that we should all take into consideration. Let's say you are aware of your eating habits and decide to eat healthy meals. You just got the grade back from that final that you spent days studying for and you passed with flying colors and you decide to break your diet and indulge in an ice cream sundae. It's okay! Having a little bit of a sweet treat is not going to break all of your hard work.

With that being said, I believe that life is about enjoying the little things. With only having a few days left in my junior year of college, I am realizing that my opportunities in college will be coming to an end soon and I am honestly terrified. Knowing I have one year left to say "YOLO" to aspects of college life is what keeps me going and with keeping that in mind, I aspire to take risks and make the most of it all.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
