The winter season can be slow and sometimes a little boring, but thankfully, movies are abundantly available for your viewing pleasure. Here are some movies that came out this winter and are yet to come that you should look forward to viewing (and some, not so much).
1. See: La La Land
Starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as two star-crossed lovers trying to fight for fame in modern-day Hollywood, this new take on a movie musical is very entertaining and worth watching. The songs are beautifully moving and the cinematography is simply stunning. Even my 24 year old brother, who is not a fan of movie musicals, reluctantly admitted that he thought the film was pretty good. If that does not convince you, then maybe the fact that Ryan Gosling learned to play the piano for this film will (it's true, look it up).
2. Skip: Office Christmas Party
Being one of those typical semi-raunchy ensemble comedies, Office Christmas Party is really not anything special. Unfortunately, the story is not especially engaging and the characters appear to have little to no on-screen chemistry. As exciting as their office christmas party is, the film itself is not and, like a lot of office parties, you won't be missing out if you skip it.
3. See: Hacksaw Ridge
This film, while filled with fairly gratuitous violence, is an emotionally charged film that is based on the true story of a real-life World War II hero, who saved the lives of hundreds of men without ever picking up a firearm. The film, though violent, depicts the truly devastating physical and emotional affects of war. Gibson made an excellent choice in telling this war-time drama.
4. Skip: Passengers
The movie was visually stunning, but while most were expecting a sci-fi drama from the trailer, what they got was a romance-fueled space adventure, which was not necessarily a better alternative. The idea of the film (two people waking up in space before they were supposed to) seemed like a good idea, but the onscreen execution was, unfortunately, not the best.
5. See: Sing
Who does not love a feel-good movie with singing animals? This film is one that adults and kids alike can appreciate, especially with the soundtrack choices. The film follows several characters as they work to discover the dreams of becoming famous performers, and the music really moves the story along (since it is all about singing). It is such a joy to watch and I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who needs a pick me up.
6. Skip: Fifty Shades Darker
The sequel to the somehow popular Fifty Shades of Grey, this film is still fifty shades of yuck. The story is dry and pretty unbelievable, and the performances by Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are rather stiff, undoubtedly because of the several forced sexual encounters that no doubt made them feel pretty awkward. Definitely not a fan--you are not missing anything by missing this.
7. See: Hidden Figures
Hidden Figures is a delightful and moving tale of three African-American women who work for NASA, and it follows their journey as they get closer to launching a man into space. I enjoyed the film because I thought it accurately portrayed the real-life struggles that these women very obviously faced during their time at NASA in the 1960s. Though they struggle, these women continually persevere in order to accomplish their goals, a lesson that everyone could use a reminder in.
8. Skip: Moonlight
Yes, I know the movie is nominated for several awards, but frankly, it was just a little too weird. It was very slow, telling the story of a young African American boy growing up in Florida. It takes a turn and suddenly becomes about him struggling with his sexuality, during his childhood, his teen years, and finally adulthood. It was a very abrupt turn of events and I thought the film was not very emotionally engaging. While the cinematography may have been excellent, the story is not at all worth watching.
9. See: Lego Batman Movie
This movie, simply put, is AWESOME. Sure, the movie theater will be filled with children under the age of 12 when you go, but there will be just as many adults there, too (and not just the parents). The film has quite a bit of sophisticated humor that many adults will appreciate, and it film is truly a fun and engaging experience for viewers of all ages.
