The small town of Elkhorn, Wisconsin is in Walworth County. It is approximately one hour southwest of Milwaukee, WI and about an hour northwest of Chicago, IL. The population was 10,084 when the 2010 census took place. I stumbled upon this quaint town because one of my best friends from college was born and raised in it. Due to the fact that my family always celebrates Thanksgiving early (that'll be a different story for a different time), I had the opportunity to make the five hour drive from west Michigan to southern Wisconsin.
For those of you (like me) who don't know much about Wisconsin, it is known for its fine wine and cheese. As soon as I got here, I saw signs advertising samples of both of these products. Wisconsin is also known for the Green Bay Packers and an abundance of fields and crops because of the fertile land.
Like any other town, there are restaurants, schools, shops, and other necessities in a town.
However, what makes this town neat is that it is known for being Christmas Card Town of the United States. This is a tradition that began before WWII because of its decorations in the center of downtown. "This tradition is celebrated every year by an annual oil painting by local artist Jan Castle Reed." Then the watercolor paintings are turned into Christmas cards!
Another surprising thing about this lovely town is that about eleven percent of the population identify as Hispanic. This may be a surprise to you or not, but it makes sense since there are many opportunities for growth and work as this rural region of the country continues to develop and expand. Families that immigrate from Mexico or other neighboring countries have been able to settle down and find a better life for themselves and their families. I have gotten to know some of the kindest people while here as I have been show hospitality, generosity and love.
In my short time here, I have become acquainted with a part of this nation that I have never seen before. My best friend received a good education here in preparation for a wonderful four-year college experiences. This is home to many who are glad to call it the place that they come from, and I am glad to have been able to visit it.
