After eight years of waiting the Seattle Sounders have finally become champions of the MLS. While it was a long time coming and after a long and brutal season for fans and players alike, we have reached this point.
While it was not a pretty game to say the least. Both teams played a good defensive game allowing very few shots and shots on goals, but the moments that occurred were fun. Within the first few minutes Toronto FC had a great chance on goal and it looking like a long road for the Sounders. However, the Sounders are a second half team and they came alive and started attacking more into the second half and into extra time.
As the game progressed it seemed more and more likely that the Sounders were close to winning the game but Toronto was not done yet. Toronto forced Stefan Frei to possibly make the save of the year and best in any previous MLS Cup, but like the solid goalkeeper he is, Frei stood tall and came up when needed.
Then the game went into penalties, and both teams seemed equal. However, both typically solid members of each team had their shots saved and it came down to the sixth shooters. The rest was history as Seattle made their shot and Toronto missed theirs. Just like that he celebrations started and the Sounders were crowned champions.
While this will not go down as one of the greatest MLS Cups in history, the Sounders actually never did get a shot on goal, but it did make history. While some will say the Sounders were lucky to win the cup, I choose to take the positive side in which the Sounders fought back from the brink to qualify and prove themselves worthy of hoisting the cup. Sure enough they achieved just that and now they can add one star to their crest.
