As of June 13th, 2018, the Seattle Mariners are #1 in the AL West.
Yes, you heard that right, FIRST.
The Mariners are finally making fans dreams come true with wins, home runs, and perfect pitching, I know I've been waiting for this since 2001, when the Mariners last made their playoff appearance. The Mariners playoff drought is the longest in all professional sports, the last time they were close to winning the pennant I was 5-years-old. M's are defying the odds this season and still winning without 8-time All-Star, Robinson Cano, who is out on an 80 game suspension from testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance back in May. Finally, instead of saying "Those damn Mariners!" my grandpa now says, for the first time in years, "Have you seen the Mariners?" with a smile on his face.
But can they hold on?
The next few weeks bring a tough schedule to the Seattle baseball club. They will have series against the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, two teams that are currently battling for the AL East. The Mariners making wins happen against these teams will definitely be a challenge. Both the Red Sox and the Yankees come with stacked line-ups and hard hitters from both clubs. The Red Sox hard hitter, J.D. Martinez currently has 20 home runs and isn't slowing down, the same goes for Yankees slugger, Aaron Judge who has 18 this season.
Although the Mariners will be fighting back with some newbies on the squad like Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger, and Dee Gordon; as well as old faithfuls, Kyle Seager, Nelson Cruz, and Mike Zunino, all players who have contributed to the Mariners runs in the past few weeks. They finally have some bats that will back up the great pitching that the Mariners have had for years, which I'm sure James Paxton is thankful for. The next few weeks against the Sox and the Yanks is a great matchup, and I'm sure it will be filled with a lot of runs, as well as strikeouts, I can't wait.
So please, for my sake, for the state of Washington, for young fans who have never witnessed the Mariners in the playoffs, and for my grandpa who has been #TrueToTheBlue since their first season in 1977, M's don't disappoint again.
Go M's.
