SNL's 42nd Season Premiere (Basically) Cured My Flu

Seriously, who didn't enjoy Alec Baldwin as Trump?!

At some point in my high school career, when my brothers had already moved out and I was too rebellious to go to bed at a normal time, but also nowhere near enough of a bad-ass to sneak out, I started staying up super late and watching TV. I have always loved TV more than a person should, but late night TV became my thing. Included in this after-hours special was, of course, "Saturday Night Live."

Ah, SNL. I do have to give my brother, Nathaniel, credit here for hooking me on the show-- he would often ask me to record it for him if he knew he was coming home for the weekend but would miss the episode, and eventually I thought I may as well give it a try. So thanks, Nathaniel. Not that you'll read this, but thanks anyway.

At times, some of the jokes have gone over my head, other sketches in total I just haven't found funny. But without fail, every weekend, the segment "Weekend Update" has made me laugh. No matter who the host is and no matter who the guest is, "Weekend Update" has always been-- and will always continue to be-- one of my favorite sketches.

Season 42 of SNL premiered last week and so far, it has not disappointed. Last week, I was literally dying in bed unable to me.I mean, I literally wore the same pair of pants for six days and showered twice (so sorry roomies, xo). Like, really, really deathly ill. I slept for six days straight essentially and couldn't even look at my phone without making my headache worse. One of the only things I was able to watch, one of the only things that made me feel better was, yep, you guessed it, "Saturday Night Live." Specifically, the opening skit from the premiere episode where Alec Baldwin's impression of Donald Trump is maybe just a little too real and Kate McKinnon (bae) does a banging job as always of Clinton. Their jokes were top notch and the impressions were Tina Fey-Sarah Palin level good. I loved every second and of course, have watched it several times since.

Coming home for fall break this past weekend gave me plenty of time to catch up on all the TV I've missed and get a chance to watch SNL. While not as funny as the premiere's episode, it still provided some great laughs, and an amazing guest host (ILY LIN!!!). The opening sketch was hilarious, and Baldwin was back again doing his hysterical Trump. Also, they had a digital clip of a high school after-party of a school play, which brought me back to my performing days and the crazy after parties we had (looking at you, Musical Revue 2015).

Hopefully, the rest of the season will prove to be just as strong as the initial episodes. I'm excited to see how McKinnon and the whole gang play out the rest of the always entertaining 2016 election.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
