Make Way for the Season of Love

Almost every store is being filled with red, pink and heart decorations. The shelves are starting to provide temporary homes for teddy bears waiting to be bought and brought to their permanent homes. Flowers are sitting idle on their cool spots ready to be purchased and displayed in beautiful vases. The chocolates are ready to be devoured to sweeten another person’s day.

Yup! You guessed it! February is here and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Don’t have a date or a significant other to spend it with? Don’t even sweat it! It’s the season of love, which means you have to show your love and appreciation to someone that you, well you know, love. But that someone doesn’t have to be your special person! Whether it be your best friend, girlfriend, boyfriend or family, how will you spend Valentine’s Day?

If you have absolutely no idea how you’ll be spending such a lovely day, here are some fun and cute ways you can spend V-day:

  1. Go out on a typical Valentine’s day date — wear a nice outfit, reserve a table for two (or maybe even a group) at Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden, Benihana's, PF Chang’s or wherever your heart—or tummy—desires!
  2. Maybe you’re not feeling a formal date and like to keep things simple — prepare a nice home-cooked meal, or maybe just order take-out if cooking isn’t your thing. And after your tasty meal, rent one of those classic rom-com movies and just enjoy a nice and cozy V-day night!
  3. If you want to keep things simple but want to go out at the same time, prepare a picnic — choose a nice spot, maybe a park or the beach and just sit down, enjoy the food and the scenery!
  4. If ya'll are the moviegoers type — take your significant other, or maybe your friends and enjoy a day at the movies! I hear "Deadpool" is out this Valentine’s day — or maybe if you like to get freaked out then "The Boy" might be the movie for you.
  5. Enjoy a relaxing day at home — sometimes you just want to go out and enjoy the world, other times you just want to stay home in bed all day long! There’s something about staying in bed all day in your pajamas with your significant other that sounds so much better than going out to a fancy dinner. If you’re like me and find happiness in simple things, then this one is definitely for you!

Valentine’s Day is such a great day to surround yourself with the people you love and love you right back! I know some aren’t as excited, but maybe you just need to be in on a few tricks to really enjoy this day! Like I said, V-day isn’t just for you and your partner, it's for you and everyone you love, so go out there and enjoy this day because there’s something about this day that makes everything special and a little bit sweeter.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
