I have a great love for both the ocean and outer space. For me, it is hard to fathom how ignorant we are about both. Despite our planet being 71% water, it has gone largely unexplored. Equally so, is space. Our probes can send back images, but that's only half the story. My fascination with the universe started when I first watched Doctor Who. It was the first time I really thought about how vast and infinite space is, and I haven't been able to let it go. Personally, I don't understand how a person could NOT be fascinated by the ocean, considering the diversity of marine life and the beauty of sunlight in the water. This poem combines both worlds into one fantastical realm.
I wish I could wade through the stars instead of the sea.
I think I’d like to feel the meteors under my feet.
I’d see comets instead of fish,
And moons in place of reefs.
Instead of sea foam, I’d kiss star dust,
Instead of coral, there’d be craters.
Asteroid belts would form the currents,
Supernovas are the sky’s illustrators.
There’d be sharks in the midst of Saturn’s rings,
And jellyfish in the glare of bright sunbeams.
Electric eels blending into the night,
And sea stars clinging to octopus kites.
Thousands of screaming stars
Hiding in the shadow’s moon,
While the whales breach in the spray of the sun,
And rays on the edge of next June.
No one has ever seen the same sky twice,
Nor quite the same breathing sea.
But when the stars and sea align tonight,
It’ll feel quite the same to me.
