27 Ways You Know You Are From Wichita, Kansas

Wichita, Kansas: the heart of the country and a place I like to call home. There are certain realities that "Wichitans" know all too well, and below are just a few of them.

1. You know exactly what a "shocker" is.

2. You have no idea what real traffic feels like.

3. The only thing you want is a Trader Joe's.

4. You -- like everyone else -- think Red Lobster is one of the best seafood restaurants in town.

5. When the tornado sirens go off, you continue to go about your day like something that could potentially kill you isn't happening.

6. You know you have some of the best movie theaters in the country.

7. You think a 20 mph wind is a gentle breeze.

8. When you are in another city, you wonder where all the churches are.

9. You often take walks down by the river on a summer night.

10. Speaking of the river, you have one of the best monuments in the country, especially during the summer.

11. You have a few choices when listening to the radio: country, classic country, country and sometimes country.

12. Going to the east or west side feels like such an inconvenience because it takes longer than 10 minutes to get there.

13. KU vs. K-State rivalry will possibly ruin your friendships.

14. When a new doughnut shop opens up, it's like the Queen of England came to town. (But, let's be honest, The Donut Whole is still the best.)

15. When you go to the coast, people actually ask you where Kansas is located.

16. You have the best sunsets.

17. Also, let's not forget the spring storms.

18. You know at least one person who will not leave the house without at least one article of clothing that has camouflage print.

19. If you want to see a concert that isn't a country artist, Wichita is not the place to do it.

20. You won't find many superficial people.

21. You grew up going to Exploration Place, the Sedgwick County Zoo and Cow Town.

22. A lot of people you know haven't seen the ocean or been on a plane.

23. But almost everyone has been to Colorado or Table Rock Lake.

24. A quick drive out into the country and you will see the best sunsets and the most amazing star-filled skies.

25. You know at least one person who considers hunting (or fishing) to be their entire life.

26. You are very creative when it comes to thinking of something to do.

27. You miss it when you are gone.

We poke fun, we complain and sometimes we want to leave. But when we do, we realize how incredible this little city really is. We love you, Wichita!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
