Sculpting Out One Awesome Summer

A look inside a summer job that's out of my comfort zone.

Sculpting Out One Awesome Summer

This summer, I've decided to dedicate myself to something I know absolutely nothing about. This summer has been about stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things. I'm working two jobs, both of which I haven't had any experience in, but one I was especially clueless in. I knew I would be out of my comfort zone, but I knew I would also gain a new skill set, experience and many memories. And yet, it's proving to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Earlier this year, I applied to participate in a program called Metro Arts. It is a program that offers different programs for five weeks during the summer. I participated in a show-choir program three years ago, and I really enjoyed it. I knew for a fact that I had to participate in Metro Arts again this summer. I took a summer off and definitely regretted it.

After showing interest in two other programs, I was down to my third choice, sculpture. I was unsure of it. I had never sculpted before, and I knew it wasn't my first choice. But it was new. And I knew I'd regret not doing Metro Arts and that this was my last chance. I'm artsy, but it's a side hobby for me, but I am always willing to learn about new things.

I applied for senior apprentice since I was old enough to, which is an intern who participates but holds extra responsibilities such as attending staff meetings and taking attendance, but I wasn't so hopeful because I had never sculpted before, and I had taken a year off from the program, and I was sure that so many more talented people could fill those shoes.

Before I knew it, I was signed up for the program and was chosen to be a senior apprentice. I was ecstatic. Hopeful. Confused. Nervous. Would I do a good job?

This program has been extremely fun and amazing. This opportunity has been one I never imagined having, but am so thankful to have. I get to work with so many other talented students, ranging in age in high school or recent high school graduates (I'm the oldest). I have gotten to work with a fantastic lead artist who is experienced and has many cool stories and insight to share with us.

I'm someone who came in barely being able to cut cardboard (ask any of the other apprentices), and am now working on a sculpture that will be about the size of me, or much bigger. We made the sculptures out of chicken wire and will add bases to them to make them stand up. Then we will add spray foam to make them sturdy. We will add decorations to them, like 3D letters that we made the first week out of cardboard (again, progress).

I am so excited to show off something I have worked so hard on at the end of the summer. I feel so accomplished when I come home with chicken wire scratches (very minor ones, no need to worry), and dirt on my arms and legs, because I know I've been accomplishing something.

Also, it's so much fun to be doing something that's a fun and somewhat obscure job. I don't think just anyone can say, "I sculpted all summer and got paid for it."

So don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! I did, and I seem to be sculpting out one of the best summers I've had.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
