When watching the premiere of Scream Queens on Fox, I couldn't stop laughing (or covering my eyes). The show is an interesting combination of comedy and horror, and it has become one of my new favorite shows. However, there are a lot of things that were very different from true sorority life.
1. "I am not missing "Waterfalls" for this:
Ok, I must admit that I have run out of a conversation when my favorite song came on at a date party, but I would never leave someone dying in a bathtub like the girls did in Scream Queens. Sure, "Waterfalls" is a great song, but your sisters are more important than a song that you can listen to later.
2. Hell Week:
Hell week is one of the misconceptions of sorority life. Why? Because it, well, doesn't exist. Although it's an interesting addition to the story line of movies and television shows about sororities, luckily it's nothing to be afraid of when going through recruitment and joining Greek Life.
3. The Hierarchy:
Although there are leadership positions within Greek organizations, there is definitely not a barrier between leaders and chapter members. There is never any down talking, rudeness or sense of hierarchy at all. If there was, it wouldn't be a real, genuine sisterhood.
4. Outfit Coordination:
Even though it looks really cool and put together, sorority women don't coordinate outfits (other than matching date party and letter shirts). We have the opportunity to be our own person and express out creativity through our own personal style instead of the styles of others.
5. The Violence:
Okay, this is a given, but sorority life does not entail a horrifying semester filled with backstabbing sisters and a serial killer dressed as the devil. Of course, this is just a T.V. show, but I thought I would remind everyone.
In conclusion, Scream Queens is far from what sorority life actually is. Fortunately, Greek Life brings forth amazing opportunities and lasting sisterhood, no matter what organization you might end up joining. However, I will probably continue to watch this suspenseful and addicting show until we finally find out who the masked killer is. Stay tuned.
