As a faithful Ryan Murphy fan since the premiere of "Glee"in 2009, I obviously was going to tune into the premiere of his new Fox show, "Scream Queens." I did not have high expectations for the show, however, and my low expectations were met.
When the show was announced in 2014, I was excited. I had started watching "American Horror Story," and I could not wait to watch a show that was not only scary but also funny. As the cast list came out, I truly thought this would be TV magic.
I was in for the surprise of my life when the trailer came out. To be perfectly honest, it seemed stupid and cliché. Of course, Emma Roberts would play the mean girl with the impeccable fashion who would get stuck having to recruit the social pariahs to join the ultra-exclusive sorority, Kappa Kappa Tau.
Despite my initial trepidations that were solely based on the trailer, I still watched it. On a Wednesday afternoon while doing my math homework, I went to the Fox website to play it. After two minutes and 30 seconds of commercials, the show finally started.
The show opens 20 years before in 1995 with a "Carrie"-like quality. With quite a few murders in the first hour alone, one would assume this was a gruesome show. It is ghastly; however, it does try to get a few laughs in between.
Personally, I feel like the show drags on. In the first 30 minutes, I glanced at how much longer the show would be. To my utter displeasure and shock, I had an hour left of it! How could this be? Finally, with 30 minutes in, I had to give up on it.
Critics have given this new show mixed to positive ratings. Rotten Tomatoes gave the new show a rating of 56 percent. Critics Consensus said the show was: “Too tasteless for mainstream viewers and too silly for horror enthusiasts…” On a positive note, IGN gave the Fox show a 9.7/10 review, stating that: “Scream Queens is as funny and self-aware as it needs to be to not bore audiences, but also offers up enough mystery and intrigue to keep even the biggest skeptic entertained.”
While the verdict for some (including me) is still out on this show, I have a prediction that this show will get a second season. It has the recipe for success: big names starring, Ryan Murphy creating, and it’s smart. Maybe I can get into it eventually.
Watch"Scream Queens"on Fox on Tuesday nights at 9/8c.
