This is a response to Reality TV Shows Are My Guilty Pleasure And No One Can Make Me Feel Bad About It
Horror tv shows have become quite popular in the past couple of years.
The genre has had many great shows in recent years such as Stranger Things, Hannibal, and The Walking Dead. Some watch these shows for the storylines while others watch for other elements such as scare factor, or gore. One such show to come out of the mid-2010s horror tv genre was Scream Queens.
Released in 2015 and concluded in 2016 after two seasons, Scream Queens was created by Ryan Murphy. If his name sounds familiar, that is because Ryan Murphy has had a prolific career in television, having created the shows American Horror Story, Glee, American Crime Story, and most recently, Dahmer.
Season one follows Chanel Oberlin, or Chanel #1, and her self-proclaimed group of 'minions' who are also called Chanels. As members of the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority, their lives are shaken up when a masked killer known as the Red Devil begins targeting students on the campus.
Season two picks up after the events of the previous season with the former college dean, Cathy Munsch, opening a teaching hospital and giving the Chanels a job there. At the hospital, a new killer emerges with the Green Meanie wreaking havoc on the hospital's patients.
The show is a horror comedy that came out at a time when most horror-based tv shows had a more serious tone. While we have had more horror comedy shows in recent years, Scream Queens was definitely a good start at laying the groundwork and setting up the formula. The show is hands down ridiculous with some of the most over-the-top characters and plots that I have ever seen on screen, One example is the pumpkin spice latte rant, where Chanel #1 goes on a tirade against a barista at the coffee shop over her latte and the specific demands such as wanting it to be exactly 210 degrees. Even though it is off the rails, I can't help but watch because the show does a good job of sucking you into the story. If anything, this is dumb fun and sometimes we need mindless entertainment in our lives for a change.
While we only ended up with two seasons, there has been some hope of a season three with the creator having hinted at it over the years. If that season three ever does become a reality, I will be tuning in.
