Debunking Syllabus Week for Science Majors

Can anybody out there explain syllabus week to me?

As I find myself talking to my friends, the words "syllabus week" keep reoccurring. I personally am a biology major and have no idea the concept around these simple words. Now I know what a syllabus is, and I can tell you what a week is, but together I just simply cannot fathom it.

So why is it that science majors find themselves without this seemingly easy week? I am in complete approval of the idea that there is just too much to learn and not enough time. Now I already feel somewhat robbed of my time for learning in the first place. My genetics class is an hour long class four days a week. This totals to around four hours a week of class time.

There is no possible way to cut a week out just to discuss the syllabus when I am already on an eight week program. If the teachers want me to memorize the entire cyclic acid cycle and fully write it out for my next test, there is no way that there is enough time in the day to sit around for an hour doing nothing.

It is almost the end of the first week back at school and for one class I have totaled around eight pages of handwritten notes already. This class has only met twice for lecture as well might I add. There is so much going on in our bodies alone that our classes which mainly revolve around this information need to pack so much information into a very short time slot.

As much as we all grumble about sitting through the "longest classes ever," we all know that there is no other way to get through the information. Most of the time we just pray for a break and hang tight.

Now how are we supposed to get through all this deep information if we just took a week off to do nothing, cutting our short time down further? It is not plausible thus making the superior authorities rid syllabus week for science majors. How unfortunate for us.

After all this is said I do have some advice for future, or current, science majors. Inhale that coffee. Utilize breaks. Stretch and take a walk. Drink some water. Ask questions. Find a tight study group, they will be so useful. Most importantly keep reminding yourself it could be worse and you could be taking intermediate accounting!

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
