In recent times, there has been an apparent discontinuity between evangelical Christian faith and the field of science. This divide has caused Christians to shy away from academia and view the sciences as the enemy, but this is the wrong approach. Christians should pursue scientific endeavors to seek God’s truth. Science and faith can fit together
God Almighty is both the author of the scriptures and the author of Creation. Both reveal the character of God: His sovereignty, faithfulness, justice and more. So if God reveals himself in those two mediums, shouldn’t they agree? Yes, Creation and scripture should fit together. God has given us Scripture. We take that and interpret it to get theology. God has also given us Creation, which we observe and study, creating science. So if creation and God’s word are to be cohesive, then maybe the problem lies with our interpretation of both.
In science, nothing is ever proven. The best we can do is conclude with a strong degree of certainty that X will happen. Repeated observations and testing is our basis for our certainty. We interpret based on the evidence and readjust our theories in light of new evidence.
Theology is similar in its approach. We interpret scripture based on cultural context, that is, present and historical context. But we also interpret it in light of the passage as a whole, the book in a whole and the entirety of the Bible. At the end of the day, we can conclude with a strong degree of certainty what that passage means, but five years later new evidence might lead us to conclude otherwise. Our interpretations have limits. The best approach when studying in either realm is humility in the face of truth.
One common misconception about science is the difference between a theory and a law. Is a law stronger than a theory? The two terms are somewhat interchangeable, but a law implies a mathematical equation, such as the equation for gravity. A theory is simply the explanation of that mathematical equation. Gravity is due to the high concentration of mass in the center of a spherical planet like ours. Mass is attracted to mass and the force of attraction between two objects is proportional to their distance.
So what does science tell us about our Creator? Stop for a second and take a look at the world around you in its majesty, the color of the leaves and the stars in the heavens... Impressed yet? Science has totaled life on earth to be around 8.7 million species. Each
Everything around us is precise, from our distance from the
What, then, is our hesitation when it comes to embracing the sciences? Is it the fact that God may not have created everything around us in six 24 hour days? Can we look at the evidence and ask ourselves, “Could God may be have done it this way?” Look at the theories of how creation occurred and ask for yourselves: "What does this reveal about God?" and "Is this the most reasonable explanation for the data we have?"
