To be completely honest, I have been napping every day since summer began. Does not matter how many hours of sleep I got the night before or even what time of day it may be (could be mid-morning), I will always embrace the nap. Luckily, my parents understand that this semester was a tough one and hey, maybe I just need to catch up on my sleep. Though this may be true for most, I am just an individual who loves to nap. Now I could explain why I think naps are essential, but luckily there is a science behind it. I am here to explain this science and provide parents or nay-sayers the reasons why naps are essential.
Naps can increase alertness.
Whether it be a quick cat nap (20-40 minutes long) or a deep sleep nap (90 minutes long), naps can help increase alertness and performance immediately after or a few hours after waking up. Just think of the productivity you may instantly have if you just take a quick break and a short nap.
Naps are Mini-Vacations.
Naps allow for a period of relaxation and rejuvenation. The National Sleep Foundation even characterized naps as a semi-mini vacation. They allow the napper to take a deep breath, clear their mind, and relax even for just a moment. Who wouldn't want to go on a mini-vacation everyday for free?
Naps can help improve your memory.
Yay for improving memory! A nap that lasts for about 30-60 minutes can improve memory and function of the brain. This can be remembering faces, places, and facts a lot easier. This research presented by The Wall Street Journal says grogginess might be a side effect, but the positive of greater cognitive behavior makes this nap a no-brainer.
Naps are the future.
Though considered still taboo among working professionals, naps are becoming more revolutionary and increasing in some workplaces. Naps can help increase productivity, mood, and overall performance. Its just a matter of time before workplaces create nap nooks (just like some colleges) to increase overall positive work environments and performance.
Now, I am biased when it comes to taking naps since I do it daily, but if research shows they have positive effects on performance then I must be doing something right. So to all those up and coming professionals or even those college students still working towards their degree, embrace the nap. Even if its just a quick cat nap, or maybe a little bit longer, a nap can help with school work, memory, testing and overall mood. If you are a student, check to see if your university has a nap nook (shoutout to JMU for having one) or find a place on campus that you can catch a few Zzz's (safely of course).
Keep Calm and Nap On.
