Classes are done, finals are over, and you’ve shed tears after parting with your new friends from science class or old friends you met last semester. You are finally done with school! The weather is finally starting to get nice, the sun is shining, the bugs are out (ew) and you’ve seen the ice cream truck speeding around the corner at least twice. Summer is finally here! After complaining that you wanted summer to "be here already" and couldn’t wait for things to wind down, summer is finally here. Now what? If you’ve been sleeping in, watching the same reruns on TV and rotting away on the couch, here are some suggestions to keep you busy during the summer!
Go on a vacation or road trip. You’ve been doing work all year round, you need a break. It does not have to be anywhere expensive and luxurious like Jamaica, Puerto Rico or the Cayman Islands! You can just hop in a car and drive to the next state over. Go somewhere you’ve never been before. You can meet new people, try some new food (which is always a good thing, yum!) and you will have great stories when fall comes around. If you don’t want to do a road trip, fly somewhere and make sure you have a comfy head pillow, music and shows to watch and snacks for an enjoyable flight!
If you want to get some classes out of the way that you don’t want to take next year or just want to take a class that you’re interested in, go for it! Taking summer classes is a great way to keep your brain stimulated so you’re not brain dead and still in summer-mode when you go back to school. If you are in college, they may also count towards your credits as electives or a class that is required for your major. You will be able to broaden your horizon, take an interest in new topics and maybe even discover some things you did not know about yourself.
Apply for jobs and internships or volunteer in your local community. You’re going to have one eventually, so start early! Get some experience under your belt and strengthen your resume. Gaining new skills and having experience, whether it be learning how to groom a dog or learning how to file papers correctly in an office, is great to have. Apply anywhere and have fun with it. The possibilities are endless!
Not knowing what to do when summer comes is an issue for everyone at some point in their life. Boredom definitely hits and will leave you paralyzed on your couch for weeks! Plan ahead this year and make sure you have at least one fun thing to do this summer. Take a vacation somewhere nice and spend time with your friends and family, get inspired and take an art class or science class at a local community center, college or public university. Lastly, take some time to look up jobs and internships, it will definitely be worth your while!
