What's The Problem With Dress Codes?

The ridiculous school dress code for only half of the school

What's The Problem With Dress Codes?

We all know that the school dress code is meant to stop people from dressing completely inappropriate, but how far is too far?

A lot of times it seems as if the dress code only applies to girls unless the guys do something blatant (which doesn't happen often). For example, the rule about shorts being no shorter than three inches above your knee. There are a lot of guys with shorts that do not abide by that rule what so ever, yet they aren't dress coded. Granted there are girls who somehow get by all teacher and administration eyes with a dress that barely covers her butt.

The no shoulder rule is beyond stupid. Though I do believe you shouldn't be able to wear strapless or spaghetti strap shirts, you should be able to show shoulders. Honestly, what is the big deal about shoulders? I don't understand why we cant wear tank tops and muscle shirts.

The worst one of all time for girls is "no bra straps should be seen." Everyone knows we wear bras, why can't the straps be seen? I understand if your bra can be seen completely through your shirt, but what is the issue with the strap showing? Like I've seen someone get dress coded for having their shirt slide off their shoulder a bit and showing their bra strap. I don't get why teachers dress code people for things that aren't blatant.

The worst part about dress-codes, in general, is the time it takes to get dress coded. You wind up missing most of two classes. The teacher sends you up to the office and you are up there waiting for the administrator to come out and see if you really are against dress code, then they actually come out and it takes them like 10 minutes to check. Once they say you have to change you either wait for them to get you the t-shirt or sweatpants that haven't been washed in decades or you can call your parents to bring you clothes.

A lot of times the reason parents are given when they ask why a certain piece of clothing was against dress code is, "It distracts the boys and takes their attention away from learning." I wonder how guys in college graduate and keep good grades when there is no dress code.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
