Halloween is upon us and as such the adrenaline runs high and terror is sought after-- especially in Oklahoma. Until recently I was never interested in exploring abandoned locations, but my best friend Darcy got me into it! A while back we took an abandoned location road trip and I had the absolute time of my life--we both did. From abandoned drive-ins and circuses to Hotel Savoy known for its Radium Water Baths I can say with certainty that Oklahoma is not as boring as I used to assume--I'm glad I was wrong. While adventure runs high in Oklahoma so does another quality I used to like to stay away from but have recently become aquainted with--terror. Oklahoma is filled with haunted geography and while making a list of places to visit with my friends I decided to share this list with other brave Oklahomans. (These locations may require permission to explore, film, or photograph. These locations may be highly guarded by security and/or police and you may be prosecuted for trespassing.Be smart before exploring!)
1.) Blanchard Cemetery- Blanchard, OK
Mysterious reports stem from this cemetery which is only thirteen miles from Norman, OK. Reports include the sighting of a man in black pants and a white shirt walking the grounds and waving at witnesses. Others report the sighting of a small girl in a black cloak, feeling like someone was holding their hand even though no one was actually holding their hand, witnesses have said they have felt the feeling of someone pressing on their backs, and flash light failures. Reports suggest that if you go to the second section of the cemetery you can see the man, however I request if you are going to explore this cemetery do it with complete respect for the deceased and their loved ones.
2.) Blue Belle Saloon- Guthrie, OK
Operating at the same location of Blue Belle was Miss Lizzie's Girls, a group of prostitutes and their madame Miss Lizzie. According to records Miss Lizzie was very smart and a regular church attendee with a clean reputation. The legend goes that families who were poor would sell their daughters to her and she would put them into work. The building held a seventeen room second floor, a gambling den, a bar, and a bordello. Records indicate that while the club was private it was frequented by outlaws and authority figures alike including politicians. Witnesses report seeing an apparition of a man around the restroom and bar, as well as a dark haired lady assumed to be Miss Lizzie, and in the basement is a disgruntled man wearing a derby hat and sporting a handlebar mustache. Reports mention that witnesses have heard him throwing obscenities at those who enter. In the bordello loud knocks and thumps can be heard and the movement of shadows. Sometimes witnesses hear soft humming and singing but others times the sound of crying fills the air often associated with Claudia and Estelle girls who worked for Miss Lizzie. Legend has it that Claudia was beaten to death and buried in the saloon next to the coal chute and next to the chute claims say that the entrance of a tunnel system exist. Was this how the murderer escaped? We may never know.
3.) Dead Women Crossing- Weatherford, OK
The story behind Dead Women Crossing involves Katie DeWitt James, a schoolteacher, and Fannie Norton who is said to have been a prostitute. The story goes that after Katie filed for divorce in 1905 she took her baby on a train to stay with her cousin. She was never heard from again, however, investigation found that she had stayed one night at the home of William Moore and witnesses say they saw her leaving in a buggy with Moore's sister-in-law -- Fannie Norton who returned alone. Detectives recovered the baby, unharmed, it was found that Fannie gave the baby to a boy. Katie's body was later discovered with her head severed. The murder is still unsolved and Fannie denied murdering Katie, but committed suicide by poisoning the same day she was questioned. Witnesses claim to seeing a blue orb-like light as well as the sounds of a woman crying for her baby and some in the area claim to have even heard a babies cry.
4.) Wheelock Mission- Millerton,OK
Legend goes that a man got into the mission and murdered the girls, from that day on the spirits of those girls wander the mission. Witnesses claim to see apparitions of girls hanging themselves from the roof and sitting in chairs with their necks cut open. A popular story is narrated by the community saying a group of teen girls who were visiting the area attempted to steal a vase as they started to leave the car would not start, getting freaked out the girls put the vase back and the car ran smoothly.
5.) Logan County Memorial Hospital(formerly St. Anthony Hospital)- Guthrie, OK
Built in 1946 and closed in 1976 it is rumored that this hospital is haunted. Residents report seeing an apparition in the third floor windows, as well as a doom and terror feeling around the hospital and the feeling gets worse when photos are taken or when people are exploring the hospital. Do not go in, the building has been ruled structurally unsound risking injury and the Police have made numerous threats that they keep a patrol in the area and will prosecute heavily for trespassing! However many have claimed that they walk around to take pictures and have had no problems!
6.) Old High School- Moore, OK
I am a Moore resident but have never heard of this one until recently, according to legend when you goinside the old high school (which is now fixed up and serves a new purpose) if you open all the lockers you can hear all the lockers slam shut. Its rumored that a little girl was burned to death inside and that if you look up the stairs you can see the doll in the same spot she left it, if you move the doll and come back later the doll will be in the spot it was originally found in. Rumors fly that if you watch the stairs you can see the little girl in a white dress float down the stairs with her doll. In the boys bathroom there is a foul odor and patches of blood can be seen on the walls according to witnesses.
