Have you been lacking your daily dose of Scarlett Johansson recently? Are you a little over her Black Widow hype (even though Black Widow is the shit! Marvel, where’s her movie?). And are you definitely not watching her up and coming Ghost in the Shell movie because you feel the role was meant for an Asian actress instead? Good on you for that, because as a Scarlett Johansson junkie, even I am refusing to see it because an actress of her caliber should have definitely turned that role down considering it would not have damaged her career at all. Anyway, if you need catch some Scarlett fever, I’ve got a list for you!
6. Under the Skin
The movie that started that wonderful Scarlett-falling-down meme. In the film, Scarlett plays a nameless extraterrestrial being whose prime mission is to harvest human males. Why is she harvesting men? You’ll have to watch to find out. This film may be a little too avant-garde for some, but the cinematography is on point and it’s an interesting watch from start to finish. It’s awesome to see Scarlett Johansson driving a white van and abducting unsuspecting men. Many of the scenes were unscripted, which adds a brilliant, honest depth to her character and shows off her often-overshadowed acting ability.
5. Lucy
This is the film that proves Scarlett can carry an action film effortlessly. Scarlett plays Lucy, a woman who is abducted by drug dealers after delivering a suitcase to them. After being forced to ingest a blue powder, she gains the ability to use 100 percent of her brain, whereas there is a myth that humans only utilize 10 percent of their brains. With her newfound ability, she embarks on a high-action journey to seek revenge on the drug lord and evading the authorities pursuing her. The plot is not perfect, but Scarlett’s portrayal of Lucy is so good; if you missed this one while it was in theaters, check it out now!
4. Lost in Translation
Oh yes, the indie film that started it all. Lost in Translation is not her first indie film ever, but it is the one that caught the eye of major film critics. Playing a neglected newlywed who feels very alone in Japan, she befriends an old actor who has similar feelings of loneliness. After a spending a few nights together, they grow incredibly close. Considering this is the film that put her on the map, you know it’s a damn fine film. Bill Murray stars in it as well.
3. Her
Another recent Johansson gem, Her takes place in the future and focuses on a lonely man who becomes romantically involved with his computer Samantha. Samantha is played by Scarlett, but she’s a voice-only character. That’s right. This film proves that Scarlett can rock a role without ever appearing on screen. She even serenades us. You’re forced to appreciate her skill and not be distracted by her lovely appearance. Joaquin Phoenix's performance is brilliant and the chemistry between the two is proof that looks aren’t the only thing that matter in Hollywood, which says a lot in today's society.
2. Ghost World
INDIE. GOLD. Based on a comic book, Ghost World follows two outcast alternative best friends and how they struggle to adjust to life after high school. Playing the best friend Rebecca, Scarlett’s mild monotone is highly entertaining. Without giving too much away, this role right here is for those who think looks are all that matters when it comes to Scarlett and uh... those people are wrong.
1. Manny and Lo
This severely underrated film showcases the fact that Scarlett was meant to make it. Johansson plays the younger sister of a pregnant runaway who kidnapped a clerk from a baby supply store; this film is quite a trip. Her character Amanda is a bright and smart-mouthed child who contrast her wildly jaded older sister Laurel quite well. Having run away from many foster homes, these two struggle to survive, especially after Lo (Laurel) becomes pregnant. The best thing about this film is that young Scarlett has her signature raspy voice; it’s so cool! But seriously, this is one the best indie films ever made.
So there you have it, a list a some really great Scarlett Johansson films. You’re welcome, and happy watching!
