This past Tuesday, it was announced that Trump is going to be the next President of the United States. My college, as I am sure other colleges did have a viewing "party" for the election results. The reason I put the word party in quotes is because, to me, I did not view this night as a "party." But I tried to not be negative either. Anyway, I was busy doing homework during the time of the election results were coming in, but I could hear various people either cheering or booing as soon as the results went to looking favorable for Hillary or for Donald. One thing this election has done is it has torn our country apart into two sections: the people voting for Donald Trump and the people voting for Hillary Clinton. It has been an interesting time.
When I heard the news about who is going to be our next commander in chief, I was scared. I still am scared; scared about how minorities will be treated. I don't know how things will go when Trump runs the country in January. I was petrified on election night, to the point where I couldn't even move.
The amazing part about being at college is that you get to witness everyone else's reactions to the political news. The tough thing is that you have to accept their opinions as their opinions and then move on. It's hard to have restraint and not diss other's opinions, but hey, someone's gotta do it!
After a night of crying and being petrified, I decided that it was time to get out of this zone and move to trying to help the world to spread kindness. Yes, I am still scared. I am a minority: I have a disability and I am a woman. These are two minorities that Trump has attacked in words. I'm not just scared for me, though, I'm scared for my friends who have disabilities too. But we can't hide in this fear because that is what Trump and Trump supporters want us Clinton supporters to do.
To anyone else who is scared, keep doing what you are doing. Spread kindness and love yourself and others. Just because a man who has belittled minorities is our new President does not mean that we have to change who we are individually or as a country. Remember, as Hillary Clinton says, "love trumps hate."
