Say No to Body Shaming, Say Yes to Self-Confidence

In a world in which body shaming is common and people are being put down more often than not, confidence is the key to a happy, healthy, and successful life. While confidence is the belief that one can rely on someone or something, and trust that thing or person completely; self-confidence is the ability to believe in yourself, your own abilities, and your judgment. Self-confidence is everything. In a society that is dominated by a media that portrays a certain body type and appearance as beautiful, many people then in turn only see the physical flaws that they think they possess. What the media doesn't report on is inner-beauty; being a good person and having a good heart is a thousand times more important than what is on the outside. A physically attractive person may have the ugliest soul that in turn transforms them into an ugly person. I think that more people should be proud of the way that they look. Be proud of the person you are, especially your inner beauty.

Body image is an important concept that affects the daily lives of many people. People look down upon their own bodies that don't match the idealized bodies of the men and women in the media. Instead of comparing their bodies to others, people should be proud of their own bodies because no matter what size, shape, gender, sexuality, race, or ethnicity, we are all beautiful in our own way. More people should rely on their own opinions of themselves, and be proud of their bodies.

Some people think that being healthy, and the attempt of starting and continuing a more healthy lifestyle should be enough, but what pushes people to strive to be healthier is not body shaming, instead it's the confidence that they believe that they can do it, that they want to be healthier, and that no matter what body type they have they will always be the same person on the inside. Self-image and self-confidence should drive more people to see their own self-worth, a self-worth that doesn't depend on your body type. More people should be able to be comfortable and confident in their own skin, not because of how they appear on the outside, but because they like who they are on the inside.

Instead of body shaming, and judgment people should promote the idea of self-confidence because self-confidence drives a person. It allows them to see that they are more than just a body, but a person with feelings, desires, and hopes. Self-confidence is a concept that encourages people to be proud of who they are and allows people to believe in themselves, to love themselves no matter what body they inhabit. When you stop listening to what other people think, you can finally start seeing yourself, your self-worth, and you'll be able to love yourself, and your body. This is the key to everything, to life.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
