Just say that you consider being non-binary an aesthetic & not a legitimate identity.
That's why you feel like since I assert myself as such I should dress a certain way to prove it.
Just admit that even though you'd like to believe you're a "forward-thinker," you still need to be able to categorize/label people based on how they dress/wear their hair.
Just say it.
Say that you don't believe that I am who I say I am.
Say you don't respect me.
And while you're at it, admit that your political views are self-serving.
Admit that you don't really care about the things you pretend to.
But it looks good. And it sounds good to people.
And then tell me that you don't support me because I don't look like, or sound like, the way you think I should.
Admit that you don't really want me to be carefree.
You want me to care about what you think I should care about.
You don't want me to be myself. You want me to be what you think I should be.
