It’s time that we all collaborate to save the Homecoming King. Oh, did I mention that he’s also the Prom King? Okay, so maybe Nelly wasn’t actually the homecoming or prom king at your school, but his songs probably were. I guarantee that you haven’t ever been to any kind of group dance function without some song by Nelly blasting over the speakers. Many of us owe a lot to Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” as it served and still serves as one of the best dance songs of all time. I would be lying to you if I said I didn’t know every word. Nelly has done so much for us, and now it’s time that we do something for him.
Recently, Nelly, more formally known as Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., has found himself in some trouble with the IRS. Fans of Nelly’s gathered together to help the rapper the one way they know how — by playing his song over and over and over again. How many times over you may ask? Just a subtle 287,176,547. Fans believed that this amount of streams would get Nelly out of any debt he has. Since the campaign began, #SaveNelly has caused a 200 percent increase in the amount of plays that his classic, “Hot in Herre.” In one day, the play count increased by 325,000. According to Spotify, there isn’t an exact update on a number of plays, but the number is steadily climbing and things are headed in the right direction for the rapper.
Not just fans have been showing their support. Celebrities are going above and beyond to get the word out for Nelly’s campaign. Stephen Colbert took it upon himself to do a parody of “Hot in Herre” called “Debt in Herre” and it is taking YouTube by storm. Colbert isn’t the only talk show host taking the initiative. James Corden featured a button on his desk that played the song every time it was pressed. It’s only a matter of time before more celebrities hop onto the campaign and help Nelly get the money he deserves to pay off his debt. If you think this is silly, just remember all of the times you heard “Hot in Herre” or any Nelly song for that matter, at your cousin’s bar mitzvah or your sister’s wedding and think of all of the good times the song has given you. We owe him one.
