In less than three months, Wonder Woman will be entering theaters everywhere. Making her cinematic debut in Batman v. Superman, Wonder Woman, as portrayed by Gal Gadot, is the next step in the DC cinematic universe, in DC’s attempt to rival the MCU. DC wishes to build a road leading to a Justice League movie, something that would have excited me to no end a couple years ago. Unfortunately, Warner Brothers has proven that they cannot make a live-action superhero movie.
Most would assume that we would start our discussion with Man of Steel, but really, where we need to start is with Chris Nolan’s Batman Trilogy. Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises were the start in this craze to make superhero movies that seemed more realistic. Whether or not the series was that realistic or not is a discussion for another day, the important thing is that these movies, especially The Dark Knight, were dark, gritty, and highly successful. With the trilogy over, it was time to move to a new hero, so why not the biggest and most recognizable comic book hero of all time?
Man of Steel was a return to the Superman mythos, but with The Dark Knight laying on a heavy influence. Henry Cavill starred as the great hero Superman, essentially a god among men who uses his immense power to protect the Earth, and fight for truth and justice. So they decided to portray him as a dopey, depressed, bored-looking superhuman who just can’t find the time to crack a smile. The movie wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t interesting. It’s hard to feel sympathy for a character that we can in no way connect to.
Following that, we had Henry Cavill return to a role he isn’t suited for, alongside Ben Affleck, who did a surprisingly good job as a Batman who is well into his career. Though he was the shining light of the movie, everything else weighed it down. No one looked like they were interested in their performances, and Gal Gadot barely got enough screen time to make herself known. The movie suffered from trying to force too much into the film, and overall just being boring.
Suicide Squad was, a disappointment. We all expected a lot, we didn’t get any of it. Jared Leto proved that he was not up for the role as Joker, which I could have told you since his first trailer. The only thing that movie did was make me want to see more of Ben Affleck’s Batman.
So now we have Wonder Woman. And I’ll be honest, the trailers do look promising. It seems to have the general levity and color that I have been missing with the previous DC movies. It reminds me a lot of Captain America: The First Avenger. We have a story back in time with a Wonder Woman origin, which I’m sure most people in the general populace don’t really know, and old school characters that have a lot of personality to them. Though I’m not a big fan of Chris Pine, I am looking forward to the interactions between his Steve Trevor and Diana.
I am really hoping for this one to be good. I love the Justice League, and though I know the JLA movie isn’t going to work because they already ruined the most important character, I can hope that the different bits and pieces of it make it enjoyable for parts.
So with caution, I have hope for Wonder Woman.
