Saoirse Ronan gave an absolutely brilliant performance in her new movie "Lady Bird." I for one was truly not prepared for something like this. I have never doubted her ability as an actress, she's been one of my favorites for a while now. She already has two Oscar nominations under her belt (fingers crossed it will be 3 after this movie). So it's very clear she is in fact a very talented actress.
However, in this movie I truly saw her in a new light. For anyone who hasn’t heard of or seen this movie (please go see it you will thank me later), Christine "Lady Bird" MacPherson (Saoirse Ronan) is a high school senior from the "wrong side of the tracks." She longs for adventure, sophistication, and opportunity, but finds none of that in her Sacramento Catholic high school. "Lady Bird" follows the title character's senior year in high school, including her first romance, her participation in the school play, and most importantly, her applying for college.
Seems like a pretty typical movie plot right? It’s truly nothing out of the ordinary. So why am I raving about this movie and Saoirse's performance? She made this movie anything but ordinary.
She took an ordinary plot and an ordinary character and made it into something extraordinary. She made me feel something when you watched this movie. She made you laugh, cry, smile, and feel everything in between. You felt something after watching this movie and that's what a brilliant actress does, they will make you feel something that you didn’t feel before seeing the movie.
I think it’s the closest thing we have to magic when we see an actress take a typical role and make it into something of their own. We don’t see a performance like this often but when we do, we should be telling the world about it. Her nomination for a Golden Globe is more than deserving.
Thank you Saoirse Ronan for your incredible performance you have given us, and thank you for making us feel something more than what we did before watching this movie.
