With Christmas nearly upon us, we know one thing: Santa is coming! Yet, not everywhere in the world sees Santa as we do. Here are some other versions of our jolly guy from around the globe:
France:
Pere Noel (Father Christmas/Santa) leaves French children little gifts in their shoes that they leave by the door.
Iceland:
The Thirteen Yule Lads leave presents in the shoes of kids the 13 nights leading up to Christmas. They also play pranks on those who are naughty, and give them potatoes. Oh and did I mention they have a giant evil cat that eats bad kids?
Italy:
La Befana is the Christmas Witch! She flies around on a broomstick and gives children presents down from the chimney. They call her the Christmas maid because apparently, she cleans your fireplace while she is leaving presents—talk about multitasking.
Russia:
Ded Moroz is like the Santa of New Years. He doesn’t have reindeer, but he rides in a carriage with his granddaughter the “Snow Maiden.” Apparently, before he was all jolly and bearded, he was an evil sorcerer that kidnapped children. Cool.
SANTA:
We all know him, and his reindeer, we leave him cookies, he gives us presents. Although I would appreciate him taking a lesson from La Befana and cleaning some things when he left.
