Dear Santa,
It's been a while since I've written to you, and I've put a lot of thought into what I want for Christmas after this long, long, looooooong year.
Socks.
I want socks.
I wish I could go back in time to past me, the one who wanted the barbie dolls and cheap R/C cars, and tell her to get socks. Then I wish I could go back in time to Christmas day and steal the socks from her. She doesn't need them and would probably get over it. Quite frankly I'm not sure why I need them so badly, but I always seem to be running out of socks. Like I always need socks. Is this part of adulthood?
Also, I know that there's likely a substantial number of children asking for world peace. Some have those parents who teach them Christmas is about giving, not receiving, which is fine because then there are more gifts for the rest of us. Some of them are really hurting.
For obvious reasons this is entirely unpractical and honestly kind of a waste to ask the man known to preference the wealthy to fix the greater social/economic/political issues of our day. Then again, children haven't always had the best grip on the complexities of society.
I know from that one year we accidentally had access to the Hallmark channel for a solid three months that you (usually) have an ample supply of Christmas miracle magic. So on the off chance you were going to shake things up on the global scale, I'm gonna ask you to do us, humanity, a favor.
Don't.
Let's face it; 2016 has kind of been the worst. In so many ways. People are hurting. There are continuing wars, ISIS, racism, economic inequality, hunger, poverty, and so much more that I guess has always been a problem, but seems to be converging into the public eye right about now. I mean, they killed a gorilla. We are going into next year more divided than we have been in a long time. This year already sucks, and, no offense, a Christmas miracle isn't gonna fix it. So let's just not.
I still believe in us, despite my better judgment. I believe we can resolve the fighting, and I believe if we work hard we can fix ourselves, at least a little. So take your magic and save it. Just until next year, and maybe, by then, we'll have earned a miracle or two. Because if there's a chance that next year can be better than this one, I'm willing to believe in you.
But also like, you can still leave me some socks, tho.
Love,
Amelia
