Being a Bearcat is just about the best thing to be, and one person helps make that pretty easy: our University President, Santa Ono. Ono has proved countless times why he is the best president around at any university in the nation. It's not only because he is attending countless meetings a day and working his hardest to achieve what is best for the university, it is because he is out around campus, meeting students, interacting with his fellow Bearcats, taking time out of his busy schedule to connect with his students.
Did you know?
President Ono was number six on "9 high-profile CEO's who did positive things in 2015?" For the third year in a row, President Ono turned down his $200,000 bonus and donated it to local charities, the university and others in need. What's even cooler, is technically, Ono is not a CEO. He is the only university president on this list. President Ono is a shining example to students everywhere of how to pay it forward. Check the article out here.
He follows through.
President Ono made a deal with the men's basketball team if they had a 10-game win streak, he would shave his head. Three months into President Ono's term, he followed up on that deal, shaving his head in front of everyone at the Fifth Third Arena. But instead of making it about himself, he did it for the kids, using the event to raise funds for the kids of the Dragonfly Foundation, a local charity that helps children with cancer.
He's silly.
President Ono takes time out of his busy schedule to interact with the students of UC. During Christmas time, you can find Ono decked out in everything Santa Claus, reading Christmas classics while students surround his feet on the floor of TUC. Although it may be in the name, it's not every day you get to tell your friends you sat at your university president's feet while he read you Christmas classics while dressed up in a Santa suit.
He cares for those who aren't UC students.
After a very tragic death during the line of duty of a beloved Cincinnati Police Officer, teacher, mentor and most importantly husband and father, Ono offered Officer Sonny Kim's three sons full tuition to the University of Cincinnati should they choose to attend UC. By law, Ohio universities are required to cover the tuition for any “child of a public service officer killed in the line of duty” for “up to four academic years of education, which shall be at the undergraduate level.” But Ono's offer goes beyond this. Books, room and board, study abroad, Ono wants to make sure the family does not have to worry about paying for anything. This shows Ono's care for families and those who are going through something tragic, even those who aren't even part of the Bearcat family.
He's a family man.
Even as busy as it gets, Ono makes the time to drive both, or at least one, of his daughters to school on most mornings, so they are able to have one-on-one time together with their father. Both daughters are heavily involved with the performing arts, and he does everything he can to make it to every single one of their performances.
His Twitter game is straight fire:
Last but not least, not a day goes by where you don't see a tweet from @PrezOno and get a laugh. Not only is he funny, but he also takes the time to respond, favorite and retweet students' tweets throughout the day. Let's just say President Ono loves donuts.
We all know him, Santa Ono, the president with the red and black bow tie, the guy who's handing out lollipops to his students on campus, the guy who's throwing out T-shirts during football games and the guy who is helping lead our favorite cheers. But also the guy who's donating copious amounts of money to those in need, making a difference and making a name for the University of Cincinnati. President Ono is doing everything in his power to make being a bearcat the best experience possible for his students, and for that reason and plenty more, President Santa Ono is the best university president out there.
